I Remember When LaGuardia Was Still Under Construction

I Remember When LaGuardia Was Still Under Construction, Painting
I Remember When LaGuardia Was Still Under Construction
In this series I explore the imagery of movement, both physical and mental in my daily life. In particular, I reflect on the energy it takes to purchase and consume. In 1807 William Wordsworth engaged with this same concept in his sonnet, "The World is too Much with Us," lamenting that people were preoccupied with "getting and spending."

I use sumi-e ink to depict movement and frenetic thinking while layers of acrylic paint imply objects and concepts. The ink and the movement of my body guides the painting in unpredictable ways and allows me to create a “roadmap” for the work of art. While the painting laments our lack of agency in a predictably algorithmic world, the painting itself was made using a technique that relies heavily on serendipity and material luck. Not all movements and processes in this world are controlled by consumerism and technology.
